What is a postpartum doula and what do we do?
A postpartum doula supports families during the postpartum period of parenthood; providing them with emotional, physical and (evidence-based) informational support. The role of a postpartum doula is to provide temporary care and support for the family during the transition into life with a newborn.
I'm here to support and guide you-- not replace you or provide long term childcare.
My goal is for you to feel rested, capable and confident by the time our time together comes to a close.
List of postpartum support services:
•basic newborn care & education (bathing, diaper change, swaddling, baby wearing, etc)
•breastfeeding support / feeding education
•newborn observation and education (soothing techniques)
•birth recovery support
•practical household help, infant laundry
•sibling support
•offers informational support and referrals
What doesn’t a postpartum doula do?
•provides medical care for mother or baby
•takes over care of the baby
•insists that parents follow any particular style or program of parenting
•heavy household tasks or cleaning
*My role as your postpartum doula is to provide nurturing support during the fourth trimester, typically phasing out by 12 weeks postpartum (at the latest or sooner, based on your needs). While I’m here to help you gain confidence in newborn care, feeding, and recovery, ongoing overnight support beyond this point transitions more into the role of a newborn care specialist or nanny.
If you find yourself needing extended overnight care, I’d be happy to offer referrals to specialists who can continue supporting your family’s needs!
